Description

Mount Outram is the highest Cascade peak in Manning Park, British Columbia. There are two summits, the northern most one is slight higher than the southern. The rock quality isn’t great, but the scramble to the summit is only class 2. The hike is a tough one with about 1800 meters elevation gain and is 20km round trip.

This mountain gives an amazing view and the feeling that you are higher than any other mountain surrounding it. The hike itself offers a variety of terrain including dense forest, alpine meadows, and talus fields. This hike is very tough and long with almost two kms of elevation gain, so don’t do the hike to get into shape; get into shape to do the hike.

Directions to Mount Outram, Manning Park, BC

Follow Highway #3 (Hope-Princeton) 26 km east of Hope to the West entrance of Manning Park. There is a large parking area next to the highway and right by the marmot sign. Near the outhouses is a wooden footbridge which is the head of the trail. From the footbridge you follow two switchbacks and continue on past an interpretive sign leading to the old Engineers Road. Follow this historical path for a little ways and then head back into the forest. A short distance into the forest, you will meat a junction for Ghost Pass Hill and Mt. Outram. Take a wild guess which way you should go. The trail continues on with steep switchbacks through the forest and halfway up the trail you will cross Seventeen Mile creek, which is reputed to be year round. From here the forest starts to turn into alpine meadows, eventually passing a small pond. This is a popular turn around spot but hopefully, we of the CHilliwack Hiking club will persevere. From the pond you pass a rocky bluff and then encounter Outram’s impressive talus field. Follow red paint markers upward. The last stretch is a bit of a slog; with the actual summit being out of sight most of the way up. When you get to the top you will realise that it was all worth it, unless it starts to rain. The view is incredible.
